Located at the Museum of Flight are a large number of static aircraft on display. One of them is a Northrup F/A-18L Hornet Cockpit. A nearby placard highlights this aircraft cockpit and it reads:
Sit in the Pilot's seat
This F/A-18L Hornet cockpit mock-up is made of wood and aluminum. It was used by the Northrup Corporation to give customers a close look at a proposed land-based version of the Hornet fighter.
In the late 1960s, Northrup proposed the design as the basis for the YF-17 Air Force fighter. When Air Force interest waned, Northrup teamed with McDonnell Douglas to modify the design for the Navy. The F/A-18 Hornet began replacing the fleet's older fighters and attack-bombers in 1981.
The Northrup F/A-18L mock-up (L for "Land-based") was donated to the Museum of Flight in 1990.
