Nave da Mestra, also known as Vale da Barca, is one of those fantastic places of Estrela Mountain. It is a cove where there is an imposing granite boulder with the shape that gives it its name, where it was created a small shelter for shepherds and mountaineers.
The story goes that a Judge, Dr. Matos, built his summer vacation home there in 1910. This work is proven by the inscription that can still be read on the main building above the door, "Dr. J.Matos - Barca Hirminius - 1910 ".
The easiest way to get to the Nave da Mestra is from the Penhas Douradas winter resort (N 40 ° 24.158 W 007 ° 34.051). From there follow the walking route T11, marked with red spots, followed by the cairns that continue to the south when this course turns to the right, always in the direction of the geodesic marker of Curral dos Martins. After this geodesic marker one must follow the direction of a big fissure in the rock (N 40 ° 21.732 W 007 ° 35.066), descending about 30m through this natural cave to the top of Dr. Matos' house.
This will be a walk with the total extension of about 5km and 300m of vertical unevenness (one way).
