The first European settlers arrived in the Red River area in 1813, led by Thomas Douglas, the 5th Earl of Selkirk. The town (now city) of Selkirk was named in his honour when it was incorporated in 1882. This clock, bearing a plaque commemorating the 125th anniversary of the town's incorporation, was placed as part of larger redevelopment of the waterfront area.
