The monument in honor of the geologist Ernst Heinrich Karl von Dechen (25. March 1800 – 15. February 1889) commemorates a former patron of the region.
Dechen was a professor at the University of Berlin from 1834–41, after which he became director of the Prussian mining department while stationed at Bonn. He made numerous contributions to geological literature and published a geological map of Rhenish Prussia and Westphalia in 35 sheets on the scale of 1-80,000, issued with two volumes of explanatory text. He also published a small geological map of Germany.
Dechen was one of the founders and the first chairman of the "Verschönerungsverein für das Siebengebirge". On the 25th of May, 1892 the VVS established the seven-metre-high monument from Drachenfelser Trachyt with a bronze relief.
