Stone and plaque placed on Charnwood Road, Shepshed, marking the site of the Whyte & Smith Hosiery Factory.
Near here was the site of the Whyte & Smith Ltd hosiery factory (1861 - 1994), a maker of the famous Argyle Socks.
The plaque reads -
'Site of
Whyte & Smith Ltd
Hosiery factory
1861 - 1994
Makers of the famous
"Argyle Socks"
Patented here in 1926
and widely exported
offered in some 600
colour combinations'
Here is a link to a patent held by Whyte & Smith Ltd, although not neccessarily the one referenced on the plaque, (

Another plaque at this location is for the 10th anniversary of the twinning of Shepshed with the Parisian suburb of Domont. The cul-de-sac Domont Close, may have been built around that time.
This second plaque reads -
'To Commemorate
the 10th
anniversary of
the twinning of
SHEPSHED
with
DOMONT
May 1999'
