This F-104 class plane spent its final years as a test aircraft for NASA. It was involved in the Optical Periscope Test Program and the X30 shuttle program.

This F-104 spent its early career in the Netherlands and Germany, before being returned to California and used as a NASA test aircraft. IT's now on display outside the Moffett Field Museum.

  • July 2, 1975 - officially acquired (bought) by NASA and arrived at Edwards flown by Bill Dana and Einar Enevoldson in GAF color scheme
  • coded as NASA 825 (registration N825NA) at Dryden Research Center Edwards AFB, CA
  • April 12, 1989 - flown over to Dryden from NASA Center by an Air Force pilot and Roger Smith and was put in flyable storage from that day after arrival
  • September 1992 and August 1993 - seen in storage
  • October 1993 - was involved in the OPTP program (Optical Periscope Test Program)
  • November 1993 - participated in the NASA (X30 shuttle) program
  • January 24, 1994 - flew its last NASA mission
  • February 1, 1994 - made its last flight
  • February 3, 1994 - dropped from the NASA inventory
  • March 1994 - went into storage at Dryden AFB
  • January 1995 - seen stored on the line at Edwards AFB
  • September 1995 - stored inside the big hangar at Edwards AFB
  • April 21, 1997 - seen for the first time at the gate of Moffet Field
  • Preserved as gate guard at Moffett Field with NASA Ames Research Center, Mountain View, CA
  • October 3, 2003 - taken from the US register
  • 2006 first noted, Moffett Field Historical Society Museum
  • June 6, 2009 - seen under restoration at Moffett Field in Hangar 3
