After visiting Ridgelawn Cemetery across the highway, we noticed this structure in front of the current High School and of course, had to investigate. What we found is a display of the original school's bell, together with two cornerstones from previous schools at this location.p>
The display is an open brick tower approximately 18 feet high. The bell is hanging at the top. On one of the brick piers are cornerstones from two earlier schools at this location.
One two-sided cornerstone is engraved: "Collinsville / (what looks like "Subing School") / Erected 1909" with the names of the men associated with its building: "Board of Education/ Dr. J.S. Crabtree, Pres.; Charles W. Allen, Treas.; John H. Beck, Clerk; G.E. Stevenson, Supt.; Griffith & Keith, Archt; P.J. Duffy, Bldr; B.H. Hester, Co. Supt."
Above this cornerstone, a second two-sided stone is embedded, which reads: "Rebuilt 1912 / Collinsville Public School" with the names of the School Board in 1912: "G.L. Hicks Director; F.M. Rogers Clerk; C.W. Allen Treas; Chas. A. Popkin Archt; Duffy & Burgess Contr".
This was a fun find and a nice piece of history.
