Zachariah is not alone as a Revolutionary War veteran in this cemetery. There are quite a number of veterans of both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 buried here. The Maine State Archives indicate that Zachariah Nowell was issued a land grant, somewhere in or near Portland, date unknown. The New England Historical & Genealogical Register recorded that he was married to Elizabeth Poland in April of 1781. Zachariah was a taxpayer in the town of Falmouth in 1776-77. His headstone indicates that he lived from 1751 to 1836 and that he was a Lieutenant in the 11th Massachusetts Regiment.
As do most the Revolutionary War veterans buried in Eastern Cemetery, Zachariah has two stones, one flush with the ground and another upright slab stone. We assume the stones in the ground to be government issue as they are all the same, while the upright stones were placed by the family.
