EDMUND JAMES SLACK
DROWNED
IN THE RIDEAU
11 AUG. 1875
AE. 38 YRS.
The once upright headstone now rests horizontal on the ground in an older, more lonely section of the cemetery. Beechwood Cemetery opened in 1873, so this is one of the earlier burials. According to the cemetery registers, James Slack was born in England, 13 August 1837. Slack resided in Deep Cut which would have been near the Rideau Canal.
According to the Ontario death registration (1875 #001486), James Slack was accidentally drowned. An inquest was held August 12th but was not reported. The registrar left some interesting remarks in the record. "I have made all possible effort to obtain further particulars from the coroner, without success."
