"Historical records of the gazebo are sketchy, as are records of many of the cemetery plots just outside the city-run cemetery.
But Sanford museum curator Alicia Clarke speculates because of the gazebo's central location that it was built in the mid-1920s. That's about the time records show that the nearby brick building was erected.
The gazebo is huge, big enough to drive through. It was used for shelter during Florida's sudden thunderstorms or possibly as a grand entrance for a funeral party. Just about everyone who can remember that far back says it's always been part of the cemetery.
The gazebo is in the center of the cemetery's four sections, making it an ideal centerpiece for restoration efforts and rallying point for cemetery preservation."
