This wall was the inspiration of the Citizens of Thornton, Colorado who wanted to honor the 9-11 victims with a monument for peace. Students from many of Thorntons schools painted the tiles with artwork and messages of peace, respect and understanding for humanity.
"The wall began with the idea to help local 5th and 6th grade students express their emotions after the events of 9/11/01. Because our children were affected by these events, we proposed a project that gave them a "voice" to the future through the language of art. We went to local schools, invited home schooled students to our centers and had painting sessions at a local non-profit as well as at the swimming pools in the summer to reach as many kids as possible. We talked about peace and had them imagine a peaceful world. They drew a picture of what peace meant to them and after it was reviewed, they painted it on a tile. If we felt they had an unusually creative idea, we asked them to paint it on a larger 4 tile design.
The project was facilitated with the help of a 12 member volunteer committee. There are approximately 1,500 painted tiles on both sides of the wall which were painted in the spring, summer and fall of 2003. The tiles were glazed wall tiles that were painted with non-toxic paint and fired at the Thornton Senior Center. The tiles were set into a s-shaped concrete form (6' x 25') to help make them more permanent. The project was proposed through the City's Community Services Department, accepted by City Council and financed through a grant by the Adams County Cultural Council with SCFD (Scientific Cultural Facilities District) funds."
