W270 is the type designation of a dredge excavator of the former company Weserhütte. Eisenwerk Weserhütte was founded in 1844 and was active until 1997 at the excavator production site Bad Oeynhausen.

The W270 was built in the 1960s. He was one of the last representatives of rope dredging technology, which had been developed to high perfection, but did not offer any further development potential. From about 1965 onwards, the triumph of hydraulic excavators began. Hydraulics as an element of the transmission of power changed the hitherto typical form of an excavator. Hydraulic cylinders and motors were replaced by winches, reversing gears, countershafts, and rack drives. As a result, the excavators were even lighter in design weight, thus becoming cheaper and more efficient thanks to the uniformity of their working movements.

The specimen standing at Nickenich was used for the removal of the lava lacquers in the nearby mining area.
