Toward the northeast corner of the common stands this tall, thin obelisk-like Civil War monument. Standing at least twenty feet in height, it was erected by the City of Gardiner and dedicated May 30, 1876 to "The Men of Gardiner Who Died In The War of 1861".

Made entirely of Hallowell Granite, the monument has an octagonal shaft with an urn finial at its peak. Carved into the four sides of the square base are shields, one with a dedication (see below), the other three containing the names of the men of Gardiner who died in the war.
