This is lock number 1 on the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal. This canal is known as the Staffs & Worcs canal, pronounced Stafs and Wusts.

When leaving the River Severn at Stourport there are four basins connecting the river to the Staffordshire & Worcestershire canal. Two basins are reached by two pairs of narrow staircase locks. The other two basins are reached through two broad beam locks of which this lock is the lower.


The canal links the Trent & Mersey canal in the north at Great Haywood junction with the River Severn at Stourport in the south.

It was opened in 1772 and is 46 miles long with 43 locks on it, all of which are narrow, single boat width locks (approx. 7’ 6”) apart from two broad beam locks at the entrance to the River Severn.
