Maltese Square (Maltézské námestí), a small irreguar and by many historic buildings surrounded square in Lesser Town of Prague, bears name of Maltese Order thanks to adjacent medieval complex of former order' commandry with Church of Our Lady Beneath the Chain.
References to the Knights of Malta around Lesser Town of Prague (Malá Strana) hark back to 1169, when that Sovereign Military Order of Malta established a commandry (fortified convent and country HQs of the order) with the Church of Our Lady Beneath the Chain on this square.
Maltese Square is dominated by the 12th-century Church of Our Lady Beneath the Chain with mighty Gothic towers and such beautiful Baroque palaces as the Nostitz with its balustrade, statues and Classical vases. The attractive pink Rococo Turba was designed by Joseph Jager. Now square is mainly lined with mellow cafés and pubs.
