The Plaza de España complex is a semi-circular plaza designed by Aníbal González. The plaza was constructed for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. Countries in attendance of the exposition included: Portugal, The United States, Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Chile, the Republic of Colombia, Cuba, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Panama, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Ecuador. Each Spanish region and each of the provinces of Andalusia were also represented. The purpose of the fair was to showcase Spain's industry and technology.

A large semi-circular exposition building encloses the plaza on the east side. The architecture displays a combination of Art Deco, mock Mudejar, and Neo-Mudéjar styles. The building is separated from the plaza by a moat which is spanned by beautiful, ornate bridges. On walls of the building, underneath a series of arches to the left and right of the central part of the building, are colorful tiled alcoves that represent various province of Spain. The focal point of the plaza is a large circular fountain.

Today the Plaza de España houses government buildings, including the Seville Town Hall. The Plaza de España was listed as a site of cultural interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) on 16 March 1981. It was also used a a backdrop for the Star wars films Episode I - The Phantom Menace and Episode II - Attack of the Clones.
