The Miraflores Locks lift or lower vessels 54' in two stages. Vessels are lifted from the Pacific Ocean into Lake Milaflores or lowered from Lake Milaflores into the Pacific Ocean. The locks were completed in 1913 and were the second set of locks to be completed on the Panama Canal, after Pedro Miguel Locks in 1911. The Miraflores Locks became fully functional when the Panama Canal opened in 1914.
The locks of the Panama Canal are completely operated by gravity with water from lakes, created by dams, flowing into the locks. For the Miraflores Locks water comes from Lake Milaflores, an artificial lake by a dam on the northeast side of the locks.
A unique feature of the Milaflores Locks is a four story building which serves as a visitors center. It has viewing terraces on each level where people can watch ships pass through the locks.
