In 1866, Mark Twain spent three months on the Big Island. He rented a horse to travel the island and sent dispatches back to the Sacramento Daily Union on the mainland.

The original tree was blown down in a heavy windstorm in 1957, a shoot from the original trunk has grown to become a sizeable descendant.
