EN: The Güggelchrüz is located on the edge of the forest west of Oberwil. It is a fairly massive wooden cross with the inscription IHS and the date 1950. The whole area and, in the narrower sense the nearby picnic area with fireplaces, is named after this cross and this is usually also meant when the term appears somewhere.

There is certainly a story behind this peculiar name meaning "rooster cross", but I could not find it anywhere. In the database of Swiss local name research a stone cross is mentioned, but this information seems to be at least 70 years old.

DE: Das Güggelchrüz befindet sich am Waldrand westlich von Oberwil. Es ist ein ziemlich massives Holzkreuz mit der Inschrift IHS und der Datierung 1950. Die ganze Gegend und im engeren Sinne der gleich daneben liegende beliebte Picknickplatz mit Feuerstellen sind nach diesem Kreuz benannt und meist auch gemeint, wenn der Begriff irgendwo auftaucht.

Hinter diesen eigentümlichen Namen ("Gockelkreuz") steckt bestimmt eine Geschichte, die ich aber nirgends finden konnte. In der Datenbank der schweizerischen Ortsnamenforschung steht etwas von einem Steinkreuz, diese Information scheint aber mindestens 70 Jahre alt zu sein.
