George Herdman was the son of Professor William Herdman (http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/people/antiqarn/wherdman.htm) was killesd at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Professor Herdman in memory of his son, built an Institute, known locally as'The Toot'. This building housed a snooker hall and the village's first library.
The dedication plaque of the Institute is inscribed with the following text:
THIS INSTITUTE
IS FOUNDED IN MEMORY OF
GEORGE ANDREW HERDMAN
2ND LIEUTENANT 18TH KING'S LIVERPOOL REGT
KILLED IN ACTION NEAR MONTAUBAN AT THE BATTLE
OF THE SOMME ON JULY 1ST 1916 AGED 20
AND IS GIVEN TO THE MEN OF PORT ERIN
BY HIS FATHER AND MOTHER DEC.1916.
The present Library building is part of the Orchard Walk complex in the centre of the Village which was built in 1987.

E-mail the library with requests, messages, events etc.;
Internet Access via our high speed Wi-Fi;
There are free to use iPads with keyboards as well as PC running Microsoft Office;
Scanning, photocopying and laminating services; and
Inter-library loan service available from the British Library for all your research projects.
