This is lock 21 on the Trent & Mersey (T&M) canal.
It is my favourite single width lock in the country because it has a muddy farmyard entrance running over the lock bridge.
Apart from locks 1 to 6 (at the eastern end) and 75 & 76 at the northern end, all the other locks are single width locks (approx. 7' 6").
The T&M was opened in 1777 and is 93 miles long from Derwent Mouth to Preston Brook and has 76 locks.
The T&M has very distinctive milestones showing the distances to Preston Brook and Shardlow (see Milestones category). They are all cast iron; 59 are originals from Rougeley & Dixon foundry in Stone, marked R&D Stone 1819; 34 are replacements marked T&MCS 1977.

The T&M links the Rivers Trent & Mersey (via the Bridgwater) and also has junctions with many other famous canals including the River Weaver via the Anderton boat lift which then joins the Manchester Ship canal. Other canals include the Derby (now disused), Coventry, Staffordshire & Worcestershire and Macclesfield canals. It also has a junction with the Middlewich branch of the Shropshire Union canal.
