The church of St.Stephen's was built in 1871 just west of the centre of Broughty Ferry, a seaside town 4 miles east of the city of Dundee. The church merged with Broughty West Church in 1962.

On Thursday 27th May 2010 a violent storm struck the area and a lightning strike hit the spire of the church, a thunderbolt that could be heard all over the area. The strike left a wide gash in the structure and it was originally thought that it could not be repaired, however a restoration programme has since put the spire back to its original state.
