William Stevenson was the first postmaster in the Town of Meaford. He served in that capacity from 1841 to 1859.
He ran the local Post Office out of his farm house directly across Bayfield Street. On many occasions he walked to Barrie, a distance of about 55 miles - each way.
Marker was erected in 1967 as a Canadian Centennial project by the staff and students of Meaford Elementary School.

Erected in Memory Of
WILLIAM STEVENSON
Meaford's First Postmaster
1841-1859
On many occasions Mr. Stevenson
travelled to Barrie on foot in
the performance of his duties
as Postmaster.
The Post Office stood directly
across the street.
Erected as a Centennial Project
by The Staff and Students of
Meaford Elementary School
June 23, 1967.
