I came across the grave of Reverend George Whitworth after noticing the bronze plaque on the front of the headstone and another, smaller plaque on the side. The bronze plaque reads:
THE REVEREND GEORGE WHITWORTH -FIRST PRESBYTERIAN MISSIONARY TO SERVE WESTERN WASHINGTON, 1854. STARTED 15 CHURCHES IN- CLUDING THE FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF SEATTLE.-PRESIDENT OF UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, 1865-66 & 1874-76. -FOUNDED SUMNER ACADEMY, 1883, WHICH BECAME WHITWORTH COLLEGE IN 1890, NOW LOCATED IN SPOKANE. |
There are numerous online websites that highlight this man's life. In 1985, the Presbyterian Historical Society registered Whitworth's gravesite as an American Presbyterian and Reformed Historical Site No. 252, a very lofty site designation for the First Presbyterian Church.
