On Church Plain north of the church wall is this old hand-operated water pump. It used to be part of the original water supply system and is raised above the ground by some 0.6m on a double stepped platform. Access to the pump handle is via the open back of the platform, the front of the platform is railed off and beneath the nozzle is a trough made of three pieces of timber reaching to the ground. I could not work out if this trough could be raised towards the horizontal where it could have provided direct filling of a container or water cart placed under the end, but it looks as if this should be the case. Apart from its height above ground this looks like a normal cast iron pump with a fancy ribbed cap, there is no manufacture's data on the pump. The platform seems to have some original timber in its construction but the supports at the lower ends of the verticals look to have been replaced within the last twenty years or so.
