FERNANDINA BEACH, FL: Harlin J. “Harley” McCarthy, age 89, passed into eternal life peacefully on Thursday morning, July 30, 2015 at the Warner Center for Caring, Fernandina Beach, Fla. Born in 1926 in Gloucester, he was the son of the late Harry McCarthy and Edith Briand McCarthy of Gloucester. At the age of 17, Mr. McCarthy enlisted in Army Air Corps and was trained as a tail gunner for B-24 aircraft. After the service he earned his high school diploma. He met Alice Augusta Hendrickson and they wed in 1950. They moved to Fernandina Beach in 1968. Mr. McCarthy was an insurance salesman. He also built, owned and operated the Down Under Marina Restaurant for 27 years. He loved poetry and the art of storytelling. He was a folk artist late in life crafting crazy little figurines out of everyday materials. He was a classic New Englander, and a proud Irishman. Mr. McCarthy loved horse racing and even predicted the Triple Crown winner this year. He was a loyal Democrat. He loved to pretend he couldn't remember your name. He loved to sing and laugh. Mr. McCarthy was preceded in death by his brother, Harry “Junior” McCarthy and Edgar “Bob” McCarthy, both of Gloucester. He was a longtime member of St. Michaels Catholic Church and a founding member of the St. Michael's Mens Club. Mr. McCarthy leaves behind his wife, Alice; four sons, Kevin (Cecilia), Brian (Susan), Glenn (Judy), Sean (Stacey) and his daughter, Kerri (Todd) Broad; his brother, Newton McCarthy of Gloucester; his sister, Jackie Gunn of Black Mountain, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews."
