Built up of several concrete cubes with rock work in the centre, the fountain itself consists of gentle gurgling gushes of water which provide a very calming background sound in the plaza. The streams bubble and spurt up from small pools which flow down to a larger pool where the water is recirculated. The concrete cubes surrounding the fountains are planters, filled with a riot of flowers, small shrubs and trees. Fountain, stage and plaza were the design of Bernd Hermanski Architects, the plaza being completed in 2008.
The stage by the fountain hosts musical events through the summer, with afternoon Lunch Box Stage performances, Thursday Jazz Nights and "Saturday Night Live" events.
Ross St. Plaza
Location: Salmon Arm, BC
Completed: 2008; Budget: $450,000
The design for this important public space involved a public plaza with benches, a concrete and rockwork fountain, and a clock tower. A small washroom and service building form the support for a cantilevered roof that covers an outdoor performance stage. Local landscape architect, Eric Reynard, collaborated with BHAI on this project.
