Lunar Crater is the primary feature along the 24-mile long Lunar Crater National Back Country Byway. Lunar Crater is a maar volcano formed by violent steam eruptions resulting from magma encountering ground water. The crater is about three quarters of a mile in diameter and 400 feet deep. The crater walls expose multiple basalt flows and rhyolite ash flow. The crater rim is made up of debris erupted from the crater by the steam explosions.
