The Lunar Crater National Back Country byway is 24-mile long loop which is bisected by U.S. Hwy. 6. The best known feature along the byway is Lunar Crater, which is about 6 miles to the south along the byway. Lunar Crater is a maar volcano formed by violent steam eruptions resulting from magma encountering ground water. A variety of geologic features including cinder cones, mesas, siestas, ash flows, lava flows, fault ridges, and alkali playas are also visible from the byway.
