Henry Schell was born in 1810 and married Elizabeth Yocum. They had a lot of children. They first settled in Barry County, Missouri where they opened a store. Eventually a town grew up there which was known (at first) as Schell Knob. Due to printer and US postal service spelling errors, the name of the location, which still exists, is Shell Knob.

Leaving their (misspelled) name behind in Barry County, they moved to Jacket in McDonald County where they made a mill at the confluence of Otter Creek (from Pea Ridge, AR) and Big Sugar Creek, about where the current route KK bridge over Big Sugar Creek now stands.

During the War Between the States, this part of Missouri was horribly divided between those loyal to the US government, and those sympathetic with the Confederacy, often splitting families in McDonald, Newton, Barry, Stone and surrounding counties. Henry Schell was sympathetic with the Confederacy. On 11 July 1863 while returning from the mill toward his home, Henry was murdered, presumably by Union bushwhackers. He was buried behind their home, which has long been replaced with a more modern house. His single grave has an ornate wrought iron fence around it, and there is both a headstone and a foot stone.

If you visit his grave, remember that this is at a private dwelling. The owners at the time of this waymark posting were very friendly, and they told us that they have visitors from all over the country stop by to see this grave. Be courteous and stop at the house to ask permission before wandering into their back yard for the grave visit.

Note that the FindAGrave record for Henry Schell was made without respect to a fixed-location cemetery. Instead, this waymark serves as the location identification for his grave.
