On trouve la trace de ce château dès le Moyen Age mais c'est au 19e siècle qu'il est transformé par le Général Philippe-Antoine d'Ornano, un cousin de Napoléon Bonaparte.
Après avoir acheté le domaine, il rénove le château et l'agrandi en lui rajoutant une conciergerie, des écuries, un pavillon de chasse et une chapelle.
Ce Général fut fait plus tard Maréchal de France par Napoléon III, c'est pourquoi les bâtons de Maréchal sont sculptés au-dessus des entrées Nord et Sud du Château.
Président de la commission chargée d’exécuter le testament de Napoléon Ier, Le Général d'Ornano fut le dernier mari de la célèbre Marie Valewska qui avait été la maîtresse de l'Empereur et avec lequel elle avait eu un enfant adultérin, Alexandre.
Six mois avant sa mort, elle donne au Général un fils : Rodolphe-Auguste qui deviendra Général à son tour. Après une carrière diplomatique il est nommé Préfet de l'Yonne mais son "... manque de tact et d'expérience..." (sic une note confidentielle) conduit l'Empereur Napoléon III, son ami, à le "démissionner". Il le nomme Chambellan, Maître des cérémonies de la cour, Commandeur de la Légion d'honneur. Plus tard il le pousse à se présenter aux élections législatives et Rodolphe d'Ornano devient ainsi député de l'Yonne pendant les 12 dernières années de sa vie. Parallèlement, il est nommé maire de Chambray en 1856 et occupe cette fonction jusqu'à son décès au château le 14 octobre 1865.
Le domaine est resté dans la famille d'Ornano jusqu'en 1930 avant d'appartenir à l'attaché naval de l'ambassade des États-Unis, M. Steele Washington. Par la suite le Château vit passer des installations militaires, des baraquements pour les réfugiés et devint un hôtel tenu par la famille Lefèvre. Le 16 mai 1959 un incendie se déclara dans la partie centrale du Château mais il fut rapidement circonscrit. En 1967, il devient la propriété du CHU.
Racheté par la Mairie de Chambray-lès-Tours début 2010, des travaux ont été entrepris avant que le parc ne soit ouvert au public : Arbres élagués ou abattus, nouvelles allées tracées et installation d'un portail en fer forgé dans le prolongement de l’avenue des Platanes, récréant ainsi l’axe historique de Chambray, du château à l’église. L'inauguration du parc a eu lieu le 1er octobre 2011.
Différents projets sont évoqués pour l'utilisation des bâtiments dont celui d'en faire un lieu d'expositions.

Later the Castle saw passing military installations, barracks for the refugees and became a hotel kept by the Lefèvre family. On 16 May 1959 a fire broke out in the central part of the castle but it was quickly circumscribed. In 1967, it became the property of the CHU.
Work was undertaken by the Chambray-les-Tours Town Hall in early 2010, before the park was opened to the public: Pruned or cut trees, new paths and the installation of a wrought iron gate in the extension of the park. Avenue des Platanes, thus recreating the historic axis of Chambray, from the castle to the church. The park was inaugurated on October 1, 2011.
