Opened since 1981, the Municipal Museum is housed in a 1920s beach house designed by architect Leopoldo Abreu. It displays archaeological artefacts of aboriginal people of the region and also antique furniture, documents, maps, photographs, and objects related to the short history of the town.
The date 1839 at the base of a Christian cross is inscribed on the bell. By the 1950s, about 85% of all Cubans were nominally Roman Catholics, but only about 10% were active members.
When we were there in February 2017 the museum was closed for renovations.
