The coat of arms has a white shield with a black diagonal line containing 3 owls. On top of the shield is a helmet from a suit of armour surmounted by a much larger owl. The motto of the arm is 'Be Fast'.

The family was originally based in Normandy in France and were awarded land after the Norman Conquest in 1066.

The family has largely stayed in this area of Yorkshire and the city of Leeds incorporated 3 owls in their coat of arms, it's believed from Sir John Savile, the first Alderman of Leeds.
