The Römisch-Germanische Museum, which opened in 1974, has come a long way. The building complex at Roncalliplatz has to be renovated. At the same time, the museum is expanded. 42 million euros are estimated for this.
In a few weeks, the building will be cleared and the "RGM" will be "on tour".
In the winter, we are opening the museum, "says Dr. Marcus Trier, Managing Director of EXPRESS. "We are gradually clearing up quarterly quarter by department, until only the world-famous Dionysosmosaik from the third century after Christ and the 15 meter high tombmonument of the legion veteran Lucius Poblicius from the first century remain."

In addition, the two lecture halls on the ground floor will temporarily serve as exhibition rooms. "But by the end of 2017 we will close the museum completely and begin the general renovation," says the director.
10,000 exhibits must be secured and carefully packaged, the oldest ones are 100,000 years old.
Then the "RGM on tour" goes, as Trier explains: "The collection Diergardt, for example, which goes back to Johannes Freiherr von Diergardt and belongs to the internationally most outstanding collections of Goldschmuck from the time of the Völkerwanderung - goes to Berlin, to the Museum für Vor And early history. Cooperations with other museums are planned. The Romano-Germanic Museum thus becomes the cultural ambassador of Cologne in all of Germany. "
Expansion to 5100 square meters of exhibition space
From the end of 2017 to the end of 2020, the museum will be renovated - for 42 million euros: fire protection, electrical and water pipes, floors, ceilings, walls, façade (insulation), building and cladding technology, windows, new showcases, ...! The cost includes storage of objects in depots.
The dark passage through which the entrance to the museum is located, which smells of urine or cleansing agents, should be closed and the museum expanded by 600 to 5100 square meters of exhibition space. The KölnMusik ticket shop is also to be handed over to the museum.
But would not it be cheaper to rebuild the museum? "No," says Trier. "For the price, they will not get rid of the demolition of the old building and the construction of a new building. In addition, the museum has a top architecture, which is why it is worth preserving. "
In view of the experience that Cologne has with timetables, exploding costs and deficiencies in major building projects - keywords opera, north-south subway or cultural center on the Neumarkt - Marcus Trier clearly confirms: "As a Cologne I am an optimist."
