The city of Rome, Italy offered this plaque to Havana, Cuba on 2 June 1982 at the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the stay in Havana of the Italian liberator Giuseppe Garibaldi.
Giuseppe Garibaldi (July 1807 in Nice – 2 June 1882 on Caprera) was an Italian general, politician and nationalist who played a large role in the history of Italy. He is considered, with Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, Victor Emmanuel II of Italy and Giuseppe Mazzini, as one of Italy's "fathers of the fatherland".
The plaque reads:
"Giuseppe Garibaldi - En ocasion de conmemorarse el 130 aniversario de la estancia del libertador de Italia en la ciudad de la Habana la ciudad de Roma dedica este homenaje al hombre que alento la idea de la independencia de Cuba
