The tramping route from the end of Clements Mill Road, to Oamaru Hut via Cascade Hut, crosses the summit of Mt Maungaorangi, high up in the Kaimanawa Ranges of the Central North Island. From the summit there are magnificent views over the Kaimanawa Ranges and high country of the Central North Island. You can look down on the airstrip at Oamaru Hut in one of the valleys to the south-east, or glimpse Lake Taupo in the far distance across the bush-clad ridges to the west. On a clear day you will see the mountains of Tongariro National Park. This area is wilderness country, The Summit overlook is a high point in the ranges and you will feel as if you're on top of the world.
This is a 3 day return serious tramping trip departing from the end of Clements Mill Road to Cascade Hut and up onto Maungaorangi. You will require the proper tramping/camping equipment to be out in this wilderness country, check the DOC website for information about the Huts on the route and track conditions. Always check the weather reports, you need fine weather to enjoy the views!
Not suitable in Winter, the summit can be snow covered in winter and weather can change rapidly. Go prepared. Maps are available from DOC.
The Summit; It's on the walking track and is marked by a pipe and small cairn, 1438ft or 438 metres. There is also a geocache placed at the summit.
If you are keen to visit this amazing scenic viewpoint and are unable to do the long tramp, you may like to check in with the local Taupo helicopter services, they may be able to help you at a cost, but you will experience an absolutely awesome adventure, one you will never forget. We can recommend it!
