The Alliance française is an international organization that aims to promote French language and culture around the world. Its primary concern is teaching French as a second language and is headquartered in Paris. In 2014, the Alliance had 850 centers in 137 countries, on five continents.
Cuba has hosted an Alliance since 1883, officially recognized in 1951. It was Che Guevara who protected the institution during the revolution and still today it remains the only authorized foreign cultural organization.
Cuba has 3 Alliances Françaises, one located in Santiago de Cuba and the other two in Havana City. Each year they host between 10,000 and 12,000 students. This figure is explained both by the desire of tourism professionals to improve their ability to welcome their French-speaking clients, but also because the Cuban government has given priority to education since the revolution of the 1950s.
