Inaugurated in 1890, this memorial is a shrine to eight medical students who were executed by firing squad on November 27, 1871, after being falsely accused of profaning the tomb of Spanish journalist Gonzalo Castañón.

Built in the Greek style the memorial surrounds the wall where the innocent students were executed, the bullet holes are still visible.

The anniversary of the execution of the students is the day of national mourning. Traditionally students of secondary schools and universities have held a march starting at the steps of the University of Havana and ending at the memorial.
