Tawhai Falls is a 13 metre high waterfall located in Tongariro National Park and the filming location of Gollum's pool.
The carpark is signposted on the left side of the Bruce Rd, below the Chateau. A walking track takes 10 minutes to reach the Falls. Return by the same track.
The easy walking track is well-maintained through mountain toatoa and beech forest but has some sections of steepish wooden steps so is not suitable for wheelchairs. It leads to a set of steps going down onto a wooden viewing platform above the top of the waterfall with stunning views of the water tumbling over the edge of an ancient lava flow into the Whakapapanui Stream flowing down the valley.
