John Thomaides, Place 3 council member, said the San Marcos Mural Arts program is funded by the hotel occupancy tax collection. He said he is grateful for the work of art done by artist Morgan Haberle Egan and designer Jana Swec.

Kyle Mylius, Root Cellar Bakery owner, spoke about the vast history of the building and said the designer did a great job in creating the mural by personifying the river.

The 100-year-old building made from limestone block has been occupied by many businesses previously, such as a hair salon and a shoe store, Thomaides said. It is one of the most beautiful buildings and the city is lucky that Keep San Marcos Beautiful is part of the Mural Arts grant program’s goal.
