[EN] To protect the city, vulnerable to the north and the east, the viscounts of Thouars had built a powerful wall preceded by a very deep ditch.
The Tower Gate at Prevost was the main entrance to the city to the north and in case of war, its best defense.
According to Jean Mesqui, it would have been constructed in two stages, "of two elements joined to each other a rectangular tower of the twelfth century, then in the thirteenth century, a tower-door with two circular turrets whose (Which is seen in the ditch) is of the Angevin type, and therefore of English inspiration. "
The interior and exterior doors are in busy arches, defended in the past by two harrows and three stunts.
One can not speak of the Porte au Prévost without speaking of Duguesclin. On the 30th of November, 1372, on the expiration of a truce between the belligerents, the Viscount de Thouars, Amaury de Craon, and his allies, partisans of the English, were forced to open the door to Duguesclin and the armies of the King of France ,
Henceforth the viscount of Thouars entered the royal mobility.
