The sign is a brass plaque with the text shown below:
BOROUGH OF DOUGLAS
DOUGLAS BRIDGE
REBUILT AND WIDENED 1937
OPENED BY
HIS WORSHIP THE MAYOR
ALDERMAN T.W. CAIN J.P
ON 8TH JULY 1937

The original Stone Bridge was built in 1777/1778, at the top of the harbour, This bridge was moved 180 yards up river in 1797 and seems to have been destroyed and rebuilt in 1786 and again in 1796 before it was rebuilt and widened in 1937.
