A establishment the Prague Elizabethan monastery with a hospital for women initiated several ladies from the Czech noble families Thun, Cerníns, Wallenstein. The reason was the lack of facilities for the treatment of patients after the last plague.
The monastery was founded in 1719 as filiation Viennese convent of St. Elizabeth.
The design and implementation of construction was entrusted to the architect Kilian Ignac Dientzenhofer. The ceremonial laying of the foundation stone took place on 8 August 1724. The hospital is still connected with the monastery Elizabethan order.

Dejiny kláštera a nemocnice
Vznik pražského alžbetinského kláštera se špitálem pro ženy iniciovalo nekolik dam z ceských šlechtických rodu Thunu, Cernínu, Valdštejnu. Duvodem byl nedostatek zarízení pro ošetrení nemocných po poslední morové epidemii. Zpocátku cítal špitál jen 6 a pozdeji 12 lužek.
Klášter byl založen roku 1719 jako filiace vídenského kláštera svaté Alžbety, ze kterého byly do Prahy vyslány dve reholnice, Angelika a Johana. Reholní sestry se staraly o nemocné, ale protože rádové regule sestrám zakazovaly lécit za úplatu, brzy se instituce dostala do financních potíží.
Pomoc prišla od zámožné hrabenky Marie Markéty z Valdštejna (rozené Cernínové z Chudenic), která se tak stala fundátorkou rozsáhlých budov kláštera, špitálu i kostela Panny Marie. Návrhem a realizací stavby byl poveren architekt Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. Slavnostní položení základního kamene se konalo 8. srpna 1724.
Nemocnice je dodnes propojena s klášterem rádu alžbetinek.
