Confederation Park was created in 1967, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the confederation of Canada. Back in the 1860s, the location of this flag display was under water. This was the turning basin for the Rideau Canal, not far from the locks to the Ottawa River. In 2017, fifty years after the creation of the park, Canada prepares for another celebration. It has now been 150 years of the confederation.
In two rows of poles, the flag display includes representation of all provinces and territories that compose the Canadian confederation. From southeast to northwest, the flags present the chronological order of entry in Confederation: Canada, Ontario, Québec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Manitoba, then second row, British Columbia, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut. Looking at the flags from across Confederation Park, it is difficult to detect the order of the flags.
