"Jusqu'au XIXe siècle, les colombiers sont un signe d'aisance et de pouvoir. Cela s'explique par le fait que, sous l'Ancien Régime, ils sont soumis à une réglementation royale qui en limite non seulement la construction mais aussi la taille et l'usage. Le colombier typique est, comme celui de L'Épine, cylindrique, et se trouve soit dans le parc d'un château, soit près d'une ferme d'un ancien domaine noble."
