Als Vorbereitung auf die Geburt des ersten Elefantenjungtieres im Zoo nach 66 Jahren Zuchtpause wurde im Jahr 2001 der erste Bauabschnitt zum Elefantentempel „Ganesha Mandir“ vorgezogen. Als eigenständige Baumaßnahme wurde ein separater Bullenstall mit Freianlage errichtet. Die Bullenanlage ist für Besucher nicht einsehbar.
Elefantentempel Ganesha Mandir

Die Anlage des heutigen Elefantentempels Ganesha Mandir (Ganesha = elefantenköpfige Hindu-Gottheit; Mandir = Tempel im Hinduismus) wurde 1926 im typischen Klinkerstil erbaut, allerdings aus Geldmangel nie plangerecht fertiggestellt. Nach aufwändigem Umbau, Erweiterung und kompletter Sanierung wurde sie im Jahr 2006 eröffnet. Dabei wurde das eigentliche Elefantenhaus planmäßig fertiggestellt, auf einen in den Ursprungsplänen vorgesehenen Trakt für Nashörner aber verzichtet. Die neue Anlage, die aus vier abtrennbaren Freibereichen und dem Haus besteht, hat eine Gesamtfläche von 7500 m². Im Innenschaubereich befinden sich ein Wasserbecken und eine Lauffläche von 500 m² mit Sandboden sowie vier rückwärtige Boxen. Im Keller des Hauses können die Elefanten durch Glasscheiben unter Wasser beim Baden beobachtet werden. Daneben entstand eine große Freianlage in Form eines verfallenen Tempelhofes. Einsicht in drei Freianlagen besteht durch zwei stilechte asiatische Pagoden."
