Woodlawn Cemetery Butterfly Garden was part of the revitalization project started by concerned neighborhood citizens.

The cemetery was an "eye sore", overgrown and neglected until in 1990. It took several more years before the project began.

Woodlawn Cemetery, originally known as Englewood Cemetery was established in 1888 by the Southern Methodist Church, with burials first recorded in 1889. Burials ceased there in 1968.

Now with dedicated citizens the cemetery is completed restored with new sidewalks, a wrought iron gate and fence was installed at the Eighth Avenue entrance where this butterfly garden is located. The cemetery is now open for new interments and a columbarium constructed adjacent to the central patio area.
