text below image "XXII October MCMIX on this first Columbus Day of the State of New York the Italian residents of Binghamton offer this tablet to the people's hallowed temple of knowledge with a view to re-asserting their devotion to this hospitable land as well as commemorations their glorious fellow countryman of the Latin race in America inspirer and leader."

The Native Americans regard Columbus as very cruel and protest the celebration of his coming to the Americas.

This would have been placed in the old Carnegie Library which was replaced by this newer building. The small brass plaque says it was rededicated Oct. 7 2007. It lists the county executive and members of the Library Board of Trustees.
