"Léonard de Vinci a conçu beaucoup de pont, principalement destiné pour la guerre. Ces ponts étaient généralement mobile avec des matériaux facilement transportable, et servaient à franchir des rivières facilement.
Léonard a construit trois variantes du pont pivotant : un construit avec des perches et des poutres, le plus facile à monter et à démonter, le deuxième pouvant pivoter et le dernier flottant. Ces trois ponts sont juste des idées que Léonard schématise rapidement avant d’en construire le maquette dans son atelier.
La principale caractéristique de ce pont est sa rapidité d’ouverture et de fermeture. Cela permettait de bloquer les bateaux ennemies ou alors à arrêter l’avancement de troupe ennemie en rabattant sur le coté comme le montre le dessin plus bas.
Le pont pivotant est fixé à l’aide d’un pillier sur une berge, lui permettant de tourner. Grâce à un système de treuil et de poulie, postés des deux cotés du pont sur la même berge, il pivote avec l’aide généralement d’animaux qui tirent sur les cordes.
