Die Eistüte am Neumarkt kennt so gut wie jeder Kölner, doch kaum einer weiß, dass sich hinter der drei Tonnen schweren Skulptur der Pop-Art-Künstler Claes Oldenburg verbirgt. Im März 2001 legte die Eistüte eine lange Reise von San Francisco bis in die Domstadt zurück, wo sie noch heute die Aufmerksamkeit ihrer Betrachter erregt.
Die Ingenieure waren extra aus Köln angereist, um ihr Plazet zu geben. Danach ging es für die Eistüte per Lkw in die Bucht von San Francisco und aufs Schiff. Durch den Panama-Kanal, über den Atlantischen Ozean und schließlich den Rhein hinauf fand das »Dropped Cone« seinen Weg zum Neumarkt.
Das war im März 2001, und nicht jeder Betrachter war glücklich mit diesem Neuankömmling. Die Eistüte des Pop-Art-Künstlers Claes Oldenburg sorgte für heftige Diskussionen: War das nun Kunst oder Kitsch, Konsumkritik oder Kokolores? Im Zusammenhang mit Oldenburg-Kunstwerken ist man diese Fragen gewohnt. Über Jahrzehnte fertigte er Vergrößerungen von Alltagsgegenständen, seien es Lippenstifte, Hamburger oder Wäscheklammern. Und wie diese, so erregt auch sein Kölner Objekt bis heute Aufsehen, nicht nur wegen seiner exponierten Lage an der Neumarkt-Galerie.
Zwei Meter hoch, drei Tonnen schwer
Zehn Meter ragt das drei Tonnen schwere Hörnchen über das Dach hinaus, drei Millionen DM wurden dafür aufgewandt. Hergestellt wurde es aus Urethanschaum und Fiberglas, aber auch Holz und Stahl kamen zum Einsatz. Was die Farbe betraf, entschied man sich für Vanilleeis als wohl typischste Geschmacks- richtung dieser Süßware. Und um den Eindruck zu erwecken, die gestürzte Tüte sei gerade erst vom Himmel gefallen, ist das Eis nur an den Rändern leicht geschmolzen. Cremig weiß läuft es von dort die Fassade hinab.
Die Portion wurde übrigens nicht vom Eislöffel zu Kugeln geformt, sondern – dies als frei interpretierbares Detail am Rande – ganz altmodisch aufgespachtelt. Die aufragende Spitze des Hörnchens soll, so Oldenburgs Kollegin und Ehefrau Coosje van Bruggen, bewusst an die Kölner Skyline erinnern. Die beiden hatten sich Postkarten und Souvenirs schicken lassen und daraufhin entschieden, dass Köln eine Stadt der Kirchtürme sei. Um das Ganze noch stärker in Domnähe zu rücken, waren ursprünglich sogar zwei Eistüten geplant gewesen."

The ice cream cone at the Neumarkt knows almost every Cologne, but hardly anyone knows that behind the three-ton sculpture of the pop art artist Claes Oldenburg conceals itself. In March 2001, the ice cream bag returned a long journey from San Francisco to the cathedral city, where it still attracts the attention of its viewers.
The engineers were extrapolated from Cologne to give their place. Afterwards, the truck drove by truck into San Francisco Bay and on the ship. Through the Panama Canal, across the Atlantic Ocean and finally the Rhine, the "Dropped Cone" found its way to the Neumarkt.
This was in March 2001, and not every viewer was happy with this newcomer. The pop-art artist Claes Oldenburg caused violent discussions: Was this art or kitsch, consumer criticism or kokolores? In the context of Oldenburg-Kunstwerken one is accustomed to these questions. For decades, he produced enlargements of everyday objects, be it lipsticks, hamburger or clothespins. And like this, his Cologne object still attracts attention, not only because of its exposed location at the Neumarkt Gallery.
Two meters high, three tons heavy
The three-toned squirrels protrude over the roof ten meters, and three million DM were spent on this. It was made of urethane foam and fiberglass, but also wood and steel were used. As far as color was concerned, vanilla ice cream was the most typical flavor of this confectionery. And to give the impression that the fallen bag had only just fallen from the sky, the ice was only slightly melted at the edges. Creamy white, it runs down from there the facade.
The portion was by the way not formed from the ice spoon to balls, but - this as a freely interpretable detail on the edge - quite old-fashioned. According to Oldenburg's colleague and wife Coosje van Bruggen, the prominent peak of the croissant is to be remembered consciously to the skyline of Cologne. The two had sent themselves postcards and souvenirs and decided that Cologne was a city of the church towers. To make the whole thing even closer to the cathedral, two ice cream bags were originally planned. "
